What is an AI text RPG?

An AI text RPG is a role-playing game played in text, where an AI narrator describes scenes and reacts to what you decide, while a rules system with dice, skills and progression decides what your character can actually do. It sits between a tabletop session with a human Dungeon Master and a classic text adventure.

The three parts of an AI text RPG

Every AI text RPG combines a narrator, a player and a rules layer. The narrator, often called an AI Dungeon Master or AI Game Master, writes the scene and plays every non-player character. The player answers in text, either by picking a suggested action or by describing their own. The rules layer turns that intent into an outcome: a skill check, a dice roll, damage, a reward.

The rules layer is what separates a game from a conversation. Without it, nothing is at stake and every action succeeds because the narrator simply agrees.

How it differs from chatbots and interactive fiction

A character chatbot answers in the voice of one persona and has no notion of turns, health or inventory. Interactive fiction, from classic parsers to choose-your-own-adventure books, has rules but a fixed script, so it cannot react to an idea its author never wrote. An AI text RPG keeps the open-ended input of a chatbot and the stakes of a game.

What to look for when choosing one
